The symbolism of landscapes as ‘foundation’ or ‘beginning’ has once been Gieta's starting point: ‘Here is a piece of land, what are you going to do with it?’


Over the past thirty years that I have followed Gieta's work, the landscapes and horizons have become more and more abstract. Gieta now embeds them in what could appear an artificial grid. By stacking and checker boarding numerous smaller paintings on very large canvasses she challenges the perception of the viewer. The question of infinity arises. 


Gieta increasingly alternates the recognizable landscapes with image fragments that remind you of a horizon, yet in fact have nothing to do with a landscape. What is the actual horizon and what merely appears to be? Gieta involves the viewer in the discussion of determining the boundaries of reality and the suggestive.
